Greater Memphis School Districts

In 2011, there were only two school districts — Memphis City School and Shelby County Schools. Just three years later, there were eight. Few communities have gone through as much educational change as Shelby County has recently. Fortunately, with some limitations, families still have access to most schools that have available spots, so options have never been more numerous for Shelby County families.

Shelby County Schools

Shelby County Schools
(SCS) is the largest public school district in Tennessee and the 22nd largest in the country.

Achievement School District

The Achievement School District (ASD) is a statewide district that was established to turn around Tennessee’s lowest performing schools, also called Priority Schools, the majority of which are located in Shelby County. The ASD directly runs a few schools in Frayser, but the rest of its schools are operated by ASD-authorized charter organizations, which are independent organizations running public schools.

  • Locate Your Zoned School
  • Transfers: In order to be guaranteed a spot in an ASD school, your family must be zoned to a Priority School or your child must have attended a Priority School last year. However, if an ASD charter school has excess capacity after this group enrolls, they are now able to admit students (up to 25% of their total enrollment) who are not zoned to the charter itself or a Priority School if the student:
    • 1) has failed to test proficient on the reading/language arts or math TCAP/EOC exams, OR
    • 2) qualifies for free or reduced lunch, OR
    • 3) is the child of a teacher, staff member, or board member of the school.

AND the school meets both of the following qualifications:

  • is a charter authorized by the ASD, and the ASD charter school’s 2016 growth score is a 3, 4 or 5, OR
  • is a new ASD-authorized charter in 2016-2017.

We did our best there. Still have questions? The ASD has set up an enrollment hotline (901-877-8ASD) and email address (enrollment@TN-ASD.org).
